AIFD teaching at Austin State Hospital (ASH).Last year ASH contacted dance groups seeking volunteers to teach at their facility at 41st and Guadalupe. Your newsletter editor, Bill Ogilvie, volunteered. The background and screening process took 6 months. But as of May everything was in place. This past week I taught the 5th class and we are settling into a routine. The classes are 45 minutes every other Friday. We start with simple line dances to music that everyone is already familiar with - like Cupid Shuffle and Wagon Wheel. Then we do dances with fun movements (sways, yemenites, grapevines, turns, and such) - Ma Navu, Tzadik Katamar, Miserlou, and many others. It is fun seeing people come out of their shells if only for a few minutes. |
