Dr. Janice Mendelson
Janice MendelsonOne of the great things about dance communities is that they bring together people from very disparate backgrounds. We lost a great example of this on June 25th with the passing of Dr. Janice Mendelson. Janice's passion for dancing was contagious and inspiring, and led to the founding of the Internatonal Folk Culture Center at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio. But beyond dancing, Janice was a window to a world few could imagine. The daughter of an army surgeon, Janice herself became a surgeon who worked in MASH units in Vietnam. She wrote many acclaimed articles for medical journals and invented medications for burn patients. A memorial service for Janice will take place on Sunday, July 17th, from 4-8pm at the Church of Reconciliation, 8900 Starcrest Drive, in San Antonio. She will be interred at Ft Sam Houston National Cemetery 9:30 am Monday July 18. Special thanks to Lissa Bengston for providing the updates to the dance community.
