This week at dancing
Holly DJs, assisted by Michel.
Holly Michel_Breger Join us for a fun evening of dancing DJ'd by Holly Plotner and her assistant Michel Breger. This week's program: Texas Camp blast! We will attempt all of the dances taught at Tx Camp 2013, including those not yet introduced at AIFD.
FranklinTeaching: In the newcomers' session, Franklin Houston will teach Roma dances introduced by Steve Kotansky, including Sa from Bujanovac, Phiravelman Kalyi Phuv Kathleen McDonagh(a version of Romska Gajda) and then some variations for Romska Gajda that add a little spice to a dance we already enjoy. Later Kathleen McDonagh will review Valle Hajde Merre Fürken ("Come Get Your Distaff"), the Albanian dance with hauntingly-beautiful music she taught last week.

French flagMisi Tsurikov is offering a special installment of World’s Words focused specifically on French dances and dances with French words. Come show your spirit by wearing French colors, a French inspired costume, or by bringing a French snack to share.

Febuary 8, Groundhog Day (the movie) celebration.
Does dancing feel like the same old thing week after week? Franklin Houston will cure Groundhog that with a special program inspired by the 1993 movie with Bill Murray that commemorates the furry rodent. The dances will keep you returning to the dance floor again... and again...and again…and again…

Febuary 15, Valentine’s party with live music by La Strada.
Valentine treeLa Strada makes their AIFD debut with an evening of romantic folk dance favorites. Celebrate Valentines in style. Bring a romantic dessert to share.

Are you CPR/AED certified?
Safety First! The AED (Automated External Defibrillator) is located next to the attendant's desk at Hancock. Even if you are not certified to operate the device, Automated External Defibrillatorjust knowing where it is could save a life. If you are certified to operate the AED please let the Board know. The Board will not keep an official list, but would like to know who to turn to in the event of an emergency. Thanks! (more details here.)

Sunday, January 26 - Where's Waltzo?
Where is WaltzoAustin Social Dance presents Were's Waltzo Dance, Dallas Night Club from 5:30 - 9, $5 at the door. The evening will start with waltz lessons, followed by DJ'd music consisting of 1/3 Waltz and 2/3 Eclectic (a mix of Swing, Country, Latin, Blues, Tango, and more). Sunday, February 2nd - Planet Music.
Planet MusicOur own Genevieve Kent in her role as History Arts and Nature Coordinator with the COA Parks and Rec department, has been organizing a world music and dance series "Planet Music". On Sunday, February 2nd, the focus will be on Eastern Europe. 3-5 pm, Dougherty Arts Center, Free.

Friday, February 7th - HGCB.
Homegrown Contra Band will be the featured band at First Friday Contra on Friday, February 7, 2014. Marc Airhart will be the caller. Please come Home Grown Contra Bandand enjoy the contra evening with the band that is indeed homegrown from the folk dance community. First Friday Contra now meets at Balance Dance Studios, located near 4544 South Lamar Blvd in a business park, which is on the other side of Hwy 290W from the Westgate Shopping Center.

Friday - Sunday, March 14-16 - SAFDF.
San Antonio Folk Dance FestivalRegistration is now open for the 56th Annual San Antonio Folk Dance Festival (SAFDF). See their website for full details.
(Note: In support of SAFDF, AIFD will not meet at Hancock Rec Center on Saturday, March 15th.)
