This Friday at dancing:
Madeline DJs, Denise assists. 3rd week of Couples Dance 101! |
 Enjoy a lively evening of dancing DJ'd by Madeline Brock. Madeline will be assisted by Denise Fynmore. |
 Teaching: After reviewing the Waltz, Stephanie Anderson and Michel Breger will teach the Polka, focusing on comfortable and enjoyable turning. The teaching will continue with an introduction to pivoting with a partner. Remember, no partner needed to attend this class.

Friday, February 2, 7-9:45 pm. Teaching session is free. Then admission fee is $5 for those 18 and older. There is no fee for those under 18,
but they must be supervised by a designated person 18 or older.

AIFD is organized exclusively for educational purposes, including the promotion and teaching of traditional folk dance, music and crafts native to a variety of countries.

Couples Dance 101 Series
Feel comfortable and enjoy dancing with a partner!
Until February 23, our regular teaching will focus on dances for couples. Starting with couple-dance basics and continuing with dances such as the Waltz, Polka and Two-Steps. Special dance tips will be included to help you dance with confidence. Lessons are free. Singles and couples are welcome. No partner necessary. Joy Diamond Our dear friend and long time folk dancer, Joy Diamond, passed away on January 26 in Georgia after a long illness. Those who have been dancing for many years remember Joy's passion and enthusiasm for all sorts of dancing. Joy also served on the AIFD Board of Directors as late as 2013. Joy will be missed, but her dance spirit will live on. Obituary.

Join our teaching director, Sharon Casteel, as she kicks off a 6 week Beginner Folk Dance class at the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center, 2803 Loyala Lane in Austin (map). This free class is the result of Dottie Jordan and other Austin Rec Centers showing an interest in AIFD activities at Hancock Rec Center. Flier. |
Saturday, February 17: Slavic Marti Gras!!
Enjoy Maslenitsa .. the rich Slavic carnval traditions!!! Maslenitsa or Pancake week is a Slavic folk holiday which has its origins in both pagan and Christian traditions. Festival conceived at the initiative of the Russian-based Forum of Slavic Cultures. Numerous countries enjoy a pancake blowout on Fat Tuesday, but no culture fries up a storm quite like the Slavic, whose ‘butter week’ before Lent involves bumper quantities of bliny. The week prior to the San Antonio Folk Dance Festival will be filled with a variety of fun and interesting workshops and events. These include a Set For Spring English Country Dance workshop, a Canary Island Dance Workshop - Celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of Canary Islanders to San Antonio; a Fun Arts Day; and a Hawaiian luau.
